From the Horse’s Mouth: The Four Stages of Ideological Subversion

Yuri Bezmenov is a name few Americans seem familiar with today. Mr. Bezmenov was a Soviet informant and KGB operative who defected to the United States in the early 70s. In an increasingly difficult to find 1984 interview with G. Edward Griffin titled “Deception Was My Job”, he laid out the four stages of “ideological subversion” created by radical Marxists to indoctrinate and weaken nations from within.

I will link a (sadly incomplete) segment of the interview at the bottom of the article. I strongly encourage you to watch it.

His definitions of “ideological subversion” are reminiscent of a Marxist forefather, Georg Lukacs who coined the term “cultural terrorism” and gave birth to what we now know as “political correctness” and “multiculturalism.” For a more in depth analysis on that, I recommend reading my piece, “The Dangerous Fallacy of White Privilege.”

Today, however, I will be briefly analyzing the four “stages” Mr. Bezmenov defines and how they relate to the chaos that has been 2020.

As we break down the strategies of Soviet era Marxism, keep in mind a direct quote from Joseph Stalin: “America is like a healthy body and its resistance is threefold: its patriotism, its morality, and its spiritual life. If we can undermine these three areas, America will collapse from within.”

The first subversion stage Mr. Bezmenov defines is “demoralization” which he claims takes between fifteen and twenty years to achieve. He comes to this number because he claims “this is the minimum number of years it takes to educate one generation of students.” He emphasizes that infiltrating the media and academic institutions are key at stage one.

What is chilling about this is that he claims this demoralization process had been “basically completed” at the time of the interview, now thirty-six years old. He claims that “Marxist-Leninist ideology is being pumped into the soft heads of at least three generations without being challenged or counterbalanced by the basic values of Americanism, American patriotism.”

He goes on to say “Actually, it’s over-fulfilled, because ‘demoralization’ now reaches such areas where previously, not even Comrade Andropov and all of his experts would even dream of such tremendous success,” referring to former KGB head Yuri Andropov. He continues, “…most of it is done by Americans to Americans, thanks to a lack of moral standards.”

Bezmenov explains that the main goal of ‘demoralization’ is to destroy a population’s ability to critically process data and information.

Even when easily refutable mantra is systematically deconstructed or as Mr. Bezmenov says, “showered with authentic proof”, these brainwashed individuals “refuse to believe it.” Members of radical hate groups like Antifa and BLM even escalate that disbelief to violence when confronted with data or history that contradict their narratives.

The New York Time’s “1619 Project”, an obvious attempt to sway eyes away from Proclamation 1625 and the enslavement of the Irish, is one example of this kind of illogical, anti-American Marxism being propagated as of late.

The 1619 project makes the outlandish claim that American history shouldn’t functionally start until 1619 (the date the first 20 African slaves were shipped to Virginia) and that the Revolutionary War was actually fought to preserve slavery in the Colonies, not gain independence from a tyrannical British sovereign.

Despite these laughable claims being thoroughly debunked and the original author, Nikole Hannah-Jones, admitting herself that she “got it wrong” on her official twitter, the 1619 Project is now being taught as curriculum in many public schools.

The point of historical propaganda like this is to destroy American pride and patriotism. If they can make people from grade school on believe that American history was founded on slavery and racism, they can make them believe that American values in general are tainted and should be discarded; patriotism especially.

Patriotism, according to fraudulent Project 1619 types of revisionism, shouldn’t be taught because American patriots were fighting for slavery and to be a patriot today would by default make you a pro-slavery racist.

And racists should then, by default, be dealt with violently because they have implicit and inherent bias they will never be able to consciously overcome; a “virus” as CNN’s Van Jones described of white people.

17th Century Philosopher Voltaire said, “If they can make you believe absurdities, they can make you commit atrocities”, something murderously accurate of every country that has adopted Marxist Communism.

Mr. Bezmenov then defines stage two of this ideological subversion in what he calls the “destabilization” stage; something he claims is much easier to accomplish once a nation has become “demoralized” and at odds with itself culturally.

He claims this phase only takes between two and five years and primarily emphasizes economic instability. With the inflated fear and panic the media and government sponsored “studies” created over Covid-19, came the economic ramifications. 47 million people out of work and a 4 trillion dollar economy put on hold over a virus with a less than a half of one percent mortality rate.

The goal of this economic instability is to cause people to be more accepting of government expansion into the private sector out of fear and create a dependence on Federal programs.

The diabolical nature of the Covid-19 hysteria is also in the domestic division and distrust it creates among neighbors and co-workers.

Those who lost businesses or those tired of staying inside for months on end to avoid a virus that barely rivals an average flu season (2019 saw nearly 85,000 deaths), quickly become viewed as heartless grandma killers or “anti-science” nuts that are selfishly exposing others to a world ending virus. Even people who simply forget to wear a useless cloth mask in public have been physically assaulted.

Many of these same indignant neighbors seem ironically happy to encourage violent rioting to stamp out white supremacy while claiming that a Trump Rally would cause a “second wave” of the virus. Again, nothing but division is being sowed here.

Where ‘demoralization’ seeks to destroy a people’s faith in their country and history, ‘destabilization’ seems to attempt to destroy people’s faith in each other, something that the East German ‘Stasi’ turned to their advantage when it came to informing on neighbors, co-workers and even family in exchange for moral or monetary reward.

This brings us to stage three which Mr. Bezmenov claims can take as little as six weeks. He calls this stage the “crisis” stage. He claims that once a nation has been destabilized, that it is ripe for a crisis which will cause people to happily abandon their legal and constitutional rights and will usually end in a violent change in power.

While we have thankfully not yet seen a violent regime change in this country, we have seen it time and time again in others, including the motherlands of Communism, Russia and China.

Mr. Bezmenov specifically cites Afghanistan, Grenada, Bangladesh and Nicaragua as examples of the crisis stage coming to fruition in his time. It would not be a stretch to include Venezuela, Libya and Egypt as even more recent examples.

Mr. Bezmenov also includes these countries as those who “disposed” of their “useful idiot” Marxist professors and activists in the transitional phase between stage three and four… something Socialist sympathetic American professors may want to be wary of.

Bezmenov states, in reference to academics, “They are instrumental in the process of subversion only to destabilize a nation…when their job is completed, they are not needed anymore. They know too much. Some of them, when they get disillusioned, when they see that Marxist-Leninists come to power, obviously they get offended. They think that they will come to power. That will never happen, of course. They will be lined up against the wall and shot.”

“Normalization” is what Mr. Bezmenov calls the final stage of ideological subversion. The word normalization comes from the Soviet practice of downplaying a radical or drastic change to a nation’s status quo.

Bezmenov says the term was coined in the 60’s, “…when the Soviet tanks moved into Czechoslovakia in 1968, Comrade Brezhnev said, ‘Now the situation in brotherly Czechoslovakia is ‘normalized.’ This is what will happen in the United States if you allow all the schmucks to bring the country to crisis, to promise people all kinds of goodies and a paradise on Earth, to destabilize your economy, to eliminate the principle of free-market competition, and to put a Big Brother government in Washington, D.C. with benevolent dictators like Walter Mondale, who will promise lots of things – never mind whether the promises are fulfillable or not.”

While Walter Mondale never came into this kind of power, this type of rhetoric seems eerily familiar when compared to modern day Democrat leadership and the vernacular they employ.

Governors like Tim Walz telling citizens that Covid-19 has made it necessary for Americans to accept a “new normal”, candidates like Bernie Sanders promising the dismissal of billions of dollars in student loan debt for votes, or deranged House members like Ocasio-Cortez’s Socialist utopian ‘Green New Deal’, which would cost untold trillions and effectively eliminate both car and air travel as a way to nobly combat ‘climate change.’

It seems as if the Marxists of today are putting Stalin’s strategy to use. Patriotism is being denounced as callous racism, moral relativism and secular humanism have largely replaced Judeo-Christian values, statues of Jesus Christ are being torn down in the name of combatting white supremacy, and these same people want God banned from our institutions and stricken from our inflated currency.

It would seem we are living in the days of the “great falling away” as described in Thessalonians.

2 Thessalonians 2:2-3 “That you be not soon shaken in mind, or be troubled, neither by spirit, nor by word, nor by letter as from us, as that the day of Christ is at hand. 3 Let no man deceive you by any means: for that day shall not come, except there come a falling away first, and that man of sin be revealed, the son of perdition.”

My prayer is that those reading would recognize the weapons of the enemy and pray themselves for a great revival in this nation. For I fear only another Spiritual Awakening, not faith in mortal politicians, can spare us from what comes next.

  1. A direct quote from Joseph Stalin: “America is like a healthy body and its resistance is threefold: its patriotism, its morality, and its spiritual life. If we can undermine these three areas, America will collapse from within.” From all I’ve seen and heard there are far more patriots, Christians, and down home decent God fearing folk than ANTIFA, BLM, and other terrorist organizations have combined. Therefore I don’t see those 4 stages you mentioned under Marxism as ending in reality for American Patriots.

    1. Hi Gwendolynn,

Yes, moral people still exist in this country but they are very obviously becoming fewer and far between.

Our nation sponsors the murders of hundreds of thousands of babies each year to the idol of convenience and women’s “liberation”, politicians kneels before BLM and avoid uttering the name of Jesus while openly acknowledging pagan gods like brahma in open Congressional sessions, Critical Race theory is teaching generations of upcoming children that the patriots who died to found this nation were racists and should be erased from history, the list goes on.

We outnumber Antifa and BLM yes, but for how long? The marxists have accomplished their goals in subverting everything of value in this nation, now they only need wait as the schools, media, and entertainment industries continue to swell their ranks while depleting our own.

      Thanks for reading.
