As many have no doubt already seen on the internet, White Nationalist Leader Richard Spencer was sucker punched to the face while giving an interview on a street corner during the Inauguration of President Donald J Trump.
For those who haven’t yet seen the incident, here it is:
Reactions to the assault poured out online almost instantly. With many celebrating the act of violence against Spencer because of his views. Unfortunately, there’s only one problem with that; it’s wrong.
While Richard Spencer, and what he stands for, may be wrong and repulsive; this does not warrant sucker punching him. Sure, what Spencer says is often extremely offensive but does this warrant violence against him? No, of course not.
Ironically enough, as is often the case these days, it is those who preach things such as, “Love Trumps Hate” that commit these heinous acts of violence. Indeed, the tactics now being adopted by the left are completely in line with what was practiced by the actual Nazis and their Brownshirts. The right has always defended free speech, regardless of where it comes from, and this case is no different. Words harm nobody, regardless of how crass, vulgar, offensive, or wrong they may be.
In recent weeks acts of violence perpetrated by the left against Trump supporters have become disturbingly common. From the incident involving a High School Student and his Father being beaten for wearing Trump hats to the shooting of a man outside of one of Milo Yiannopoulos’ events.
The left has become violently unhinged and before we justify an assault on a man because he happens to be a Nazi, let’s remember that to the left everyone on the right is a Nazi. Given the opportunity, they’d engage in such acts of violence against everyone on the right. Indeed, as the above examples show, they already have.
Spencer, for lack of a better term, may be a jerk. But that doesn’t mean he deserves to be sucker punched in the face for merely expressing his views.
